What Is the Best Month to Visit Phuket for Good Weather?

There is a genuinely best month — and a second-best one most people overlook.

What is the best month to visit phuket for good weather? January and February are the driest and calmest months, with the least rain, the clearest skies and the most settled sea. November, December, March and April are also reliably good, with March and April bringing noticeably more heat. The wettest months are September and October, and the southwest monsoon runs roughly May to October. If you want the best weather with fewer crowds and lower prices, November and early December are the sweet spot.

Quick answer: Best overall: January–February — driest, calmest, clearest · Also reliable: November, December, March, April (March–April is hotter) · Wettest: September–October · Monsoon roughly May–October · Best value with good weather: November and early December · Peak crowds and prices: December–February.

The short answer

January and February

If good weather is your only criterion, January and February win. They sit in the middle of the northeast monsoon period, which brings dry, settled conditions to Phuket’s west coast: minimal rain, clear skies, calm seas and the best underwater visibility of the year. Every island trip runs reliably, sunsets are consistent, and the risk of a weather-cancelled boat day is at its lowest.

The trade-off

Those same months are the busiest and most expensive. Beaches, Maya Bay and the main viewpoints are at their fullest, hotel rates peak, and popular tours book out. Perfect weather and a quiet island are not available at the same time.

The two monsoons explained

Why the west coast matters

Phuket sits on the Andaman coast, which is affected by the southwest monsoon from roughly May to October. That brings rain and, more importantly for travellers, swell and rip currents to the west-coast beaches where most visitors stay. The northeast monsoon period from around November to April brings the dry, settled conditions that define Phuket’s high season. This is also why Phuket and Koh Samui have opposite best seasons — Samui sits on the Gulf coast and follows a different pattern.

The value sweet spot

November and early December

If you want high-season weather without high-season crowds and pricing, November and the first half of December are the strongest choice. The rain has largely cleared, the sea has settled, island trips run reliably, and the Similan national park has reopened — but hotel rates haven’t yet reached their December peak and the beaches are noticeably less crowded than in January. Late April is the mirror image on the other side, though hotter.

Island seasons to plan around

Dates that override the weather

  • Similan Islands — national park open roughly 15 October to 15 May only
  • Maya Bay — closes annually 1 August to 30 September
  • Phang Nga Bay — sheltered and reliable year-round
  • Coral and Racha — close in and workable across most of the year
  • Surfing at Kata and Kalim — needs green-season swell, May to October

Heat and humidity

Not the same as rain

March, April and May are the hottest months, with April typically the peak. Dry does not mean comfortable: April can be more physically demanding than a showery July day, especially for long walks, viewpoints and temple visits. If you’re sensitive to heat, January and February are more comfortable than March and April despite similar rainfall, and December is often the most pleasant month overall.

How rain actually behaves

A realistic picture

Even in wet months, Phuket rarely rains all day. The typical pattern is heavy downpours lasting an hour or two, often in the afternoon, with sunny periods either side. September and October are the exception, where multi-day wet spells are common. For most of the green season, the practical impact is fewer guaranteed beach hours and more variable sea conditions rather than a washout — which is why green-season trips still work with flexible planning. 1. Best weather, cost no object — January or February
  2. Best weather-to-value ratio — November or early December
  3. Diving and visibility — January to March, with the Similans open
  4. Fewest crowds — September, but expect rain
  5. Lowest prices — May to October
  6. Avoid if rain matters — September and October

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Phuket for good weather?

January and February are the driest and calmest, with minimal rain, clear skies, settled seas and the best visibility. They’re also the busiest and most expensive months, so perfect weather and a quiet island aren’t available together.

Which months are the wettest in Phuket?

September and October, when multi-day wet spells are common and the west-coast sea is at its roughest. The southwest monsoon runs roughly May to October, with rainfall building through the period and easing late in October.

When is the best value time to visit Phuket?

November and the first half of December. The rain has largely cleared, the sea has settled and the Similan park has reopened, but hotel rates haven’t reached their December peak and beaches are less crowded than in January.

What is the hottest time of year in Phuket?

March, April and May, with April typically the peak. Dry doesn’t mean comfortable — April can be more physically demanding than a showery July day, particularly for viewpoints, temple visits and long walks.

Does it rain all day during the green season?

Rarely. The typical pattern is heavy downpours lasting an hour or two, often in the afternoon, with sunny periods either side. September and October are the exception, where longer wet spells are more common.

Why do Phuket and Koh Samui have different best seasons?

Because they sit on opposite coasts. Phuket is on the Andaman side and follows the southwest monsoon pattern from May to October, while Samui is on the Gulf coast and follows a different rainfall cycle.
