Most island tours still run in monsoon season — the question is which ones run reliably.
Which phuket island tours run during monsoon season? Most still operate, but reliability varies sharply by destination. Phang Nga Bay is sheltered and runs most consistently year-round. Coral Island and Racha are close to shore and workable on the majority of days. Phi Phi trips continue but are the most likely to be adjusted or rescheduled in swell. The Similan Islands are the clear exception: the national park closes entirely from roughly 16 May to 14 October, so no operator can run them.
Reliability by destination
What runs and how consistently
| Destination | Monsoon reliability | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Phang Nga Bay | Most reliable | Sheltered bay, protected from open-sea swell |
| Coral Island (Koh Hey) | Usually workable | 15–20 min crossing, partly sheltered |
| Racha Island | Often workable | Clear water year-round; crossing can be rougher |
| Khai Island | Usually workable | Short crossing, shallow calm water |
| Phi Phi | Runs, but varies | Open-sea crossing most affected by swell |
| Similan Islands | Closed | National park shut roughly 16 May – 14 Oct |
Reliability reflects exposure to open sea more than rainfall.
Why Phang Nga is the safe bet
Sheltered water changes everything
Phang Nga Bay sits on Phuket’s east side, enclosed by the mainland and hundreds of limestone karsts. That geography shelters it from the southwest swell that affects the open Andaman, so trips there run consistently through the monsoon when west-coast and open-sea routes are variable. The scenery is also arguably better in green season, with low cloud around the karsts and everything unusually green. It is the destination we most often recommend for monsoon-season travellers. See our James Bond Island page.
The Similan closure
Not a weather call — a legal one
The Similan Islands national park closes annually from around 16 May to 14 October for environmental recovery. This is not an operator decision or a weather judgement: the park is shut and no tour can legally run. If anyone offers you a Similan trip during that window, they are either mistaken or selling something else. The park reopens around 15 October, at which point trips resume with the E-Ticket system and daily visitor cap. See our island tour season guide.
Maya Bay’s separate closure
A different set of dates
Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh closes every year from 1 August to 30 September, which overlaps with but is distinct from the monsoon. During that period Phi Phi tours still run and view the bay from the water, but you cannot land at the beach. If walking onto Maya Bay matters to you, avoid those two months regardless of the weather.
How operators handle rough days
What should happen
A licensed operator monitors conditions and marine-authority announcements, and will cancel or reschedule when the sea isn’t safe. That is the correct behaviour and exactly what you want, even though it’s frustrating on the day. Some operators substitute a sheltered route rather than cancelling outright — for example moving a Phi Phi booking to Phang Nga. Ask what their practice is before booking, and be sceptical of anyone who claims they always sail. See our weather cancellation guide.
Planning tactics that work
Making monsoon island days work
- Book your island day early in the trip, leaving spare days to reschedule
- Choose morning departures, when conditions are usually calmest
- Pick sheltered destinations when wind is in the forecast
- Consider a speed catamaran over a speedboat — noticeably steadier in swell
- Confirm the weather policy before paying
- Keep a land-based alternative in reserve for each island day
What monsoon island days are actually like
Setting expectations
On a workable monsoon day the islands are dramatically quieter than in January — Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and the main beaches can feel almost empty by comparison. Water clarity is usually lower than high season but often still good at sheltered spots. Expect a bumpier crossing, a higher chance of rain during the day, and more variable light for photos. Many repeat visitors prefer it precisely because of the space.
Alternatives when the sea is closed
Days that always work
- Phuket Old Town — heritage streets, cafes and food
- Andamanda water park — indoor-outdoor and fine in rain
- Big Buddha and Wat Chalong — land-based sightseeing
- Evening shows — Carnival Magic, FantaSea, Simon Cabaret, Muay Thai
- Cooking classes and spas — unaffected by weather
- Surfing at Kata or Kalim — this is the season for it

Frequently asked questions
Which Phuket island tours run during monsoon season?
Most still run. Phang Nga Bay is the most reliable because it’s sheltered, Coral Island, Racha and Khai are usually workable, and Phi Phi runs but varies with swell. The Similan Islands are closed entirely.
Why are the Similan Islands closed in monsoon season?
Because the national park shuts annually from around 16 May to 14 October for environmental recovery. This isn’t a weather judgement or an operator decision — no tour can legally run during that window.
Is Phang Nga Bay good in monsoon season?
It’s the most reliable option. The bay is enclosed by the mainland and limestone karsts, sheltering it from southwest swell, and many people find the scenery better in green season with low cloud and lush greenery.
What happens if my island tour is cancelled for weather?
A licensed operator will cancel or reschedule when the sea isn’t safe. Some substitute a sheltered route instead, such as moving a Phi Phi booking to Phang Nga. Confirm the policy before booking.
Can you still visit Maya Bay during monsoon season?
Phi Phi tours run and view the bay from the water, but Maya Bay itself closes every year from 1 August to 30 September, so you can’t land at the beach during those two months regardless of weather.
How can I make monsoon island days more reliable?
Book your island day early in the trip so it can be rescheduled, take morning departures when conditions are calmest, choose sheltered destinations when wind is forecast, and consider a catamaran over a speedboat.
Plan with confidence
Prices, opening hours and availability change with the season, and marine or outdoor activities can be adjusted for weather and safety. For a smooth trip, book with a TAT-licensed operator (License No. 34/02294), confirm inclusions and transfer arrangements in writing, and reconfirm current prices and availability at the time of booking. National-park fees may apply on island stops.
