Pick the wrong beach and you’ll spend your holiday in a taxi. Pick the right one and you’ll barely need transport.
Where to stay in Phuket depends on what you want your days to look like. Patong is the busiest and most convenient for nightlife and shopping; Kata and Karon balance good beaches with restaurants in walking distance; Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao are quieter and more resort-focused; Rawai and Nai Harn in the far south are the calmest but furthest from the airport; and Phuket Old Town offers culture and food with no beach at all. Your choice also sets your transfer times for every tour and airport run.

Patong
Convenient, and unapologetically busy
Patong is the island’s commercial centre: the widest choice of hotels at every price, the most restaurants, shopping malls, and Bangla Road’s nightlife. Everything is close together and taxis are always available. The trade-off is noise, crowds and a beach that gets very busy. It suits first-time visitors who want convenience, groups, and anyone who values having options on their doorstep more than tranquillity.
Kata and Karon
The balanced choice
These neighbouring beaches south of Patong are where many repeat visitors settle. Karon has a long, wide beach and a calmer strip of restaurants; Kata is more compact and walkable, with a good beach, surfing in green season and a decent food scene. Both are quieter than Patong while still letting you walk to dinner — which matters more than people expect over a week. Transfers run 60 to 75 minutes from the airport.
Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao
Quieter and more resort-led
North of Patong, these areas trade nightlife for space and calm. Kamala is a small beach town, conveniently close to the Carnival Magic and Phuket FantaSea evening venues. Surin and Bang Tao are more upmarket and spread out, with larger resorts and a slower pace. They suit couples, longer stays and travellers who plan to eat mostly at their hotel. See our Phuket shows page if evening entertainment is part of the plan.
Rawai and Nai Harn
Calmest, but furthest out
The far south has a more residential, local feel, with Nai Harn’s beach widely rated one of the island’s best and Rawai known for seafood and its pier. It’s the quietest option and popular with repeat visitors and long-stayers. The cost is distance: 75 to 90 minutes from the airport and longer pickups for every tour. Worth it for a relaxed two-week stay, less so for a three-night trip.
Phuket Old Town and the north
Two different alternatives
Phuket Old Town has no beach, but offers Sino-Portuguese architecture, cafes, street food and markets — a genuinely different experience, and well placed for airport access. The northern beaches of Mai Khao and Nai Yang are very quiet, close to the airport and backed by national park, suiting travellers who want seclusion or a short first or last night. See our Phuket Old Town guide.
How location affects your budget
The hidden cost of staying far out
Transport costs compound. If you’re staying in Rawai and eating out nightly in Patong, you’re adding two journeys a day. Staying somewhere walkable removes that entirely. Tours generally include hotel pickup within standard zones, but remote areas can carry a surcharge — worth confirming when booking, as it applies per trip. See our getting around without a car guide.

Frequently asked questions
Where should I stay in Phuket for the first time?
Patong, Kata or Karon are the usual first-time choices. Patong offers the most convenience, restaurants and nightlife, while Kata and Karon balance good beaches with walkable dining and a calmer pace.
Which area of Phuket is best for families?
Kata, Karon and Bang Tao work well — they have swimmable beaches, walkable restaurants and family-friendly resorts without Patong’s nightlife noise. Kata in particular is compact and easy with children.
Where is quietest in Phuket?
Rawai and Nai Harn in the far south, plus the northern beaches of Mai Khao and Nai Yang, are the quietest. The southern areas are furthest from the airport at 75 to 90 minutes, while the north is closest.
Is it worth staying in Phuket Old Town?
If you want culture, cafes, street food and Sino-Portuguese architecture rather than a beach, yes. It’s a genuinely different experience and well placed for the airport, but you’ll travel to reach any beach.
How does location affect tour pickups?
Most tours include hotel pickup within standard zones covering the main tourist areas. Remote properties can carry a surcharge per trip, and staying far south adds significant time to every pickup and return.
Which area is closest to the airport?
Mai Khao, Nai Yang and Layan in the north are 20 to 30 minutes away. Patong is 45 to 60, Kata and Karon 60 to 75, and Rawai or Nai Harn in the far south up to 90 minutes in traffic.
